What is Baby Ultrasound?

A baby ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to create pictures of your developing baby during pregnancy. It’s one of the most common and important tools for checking your baby’s health, growth, and development — without using any radiation.

Ultrasounds are typically performed at different stages of pregnancy, including the 12-week ultrasound, which helps confirm your due date and check for early development, and the 20-week ultrasound, often called the anatomy scan, where detailed images of the baby’s organs, spine, limbs, and heartbeat are reviewed.

The procedure is painless and usually takes 20 to 45 minutes. You may be able to see your baby move, stretch, or even suck their thumb in real time on the screen.

Whether it’s your first pregnancy or your fourth, a baby ultrasound is a special moment that gives you and your healthcare provider a clear view of your growing baby.

What to Expect During a Baby Ultrasound

Answers to frequently asked questions you may have about Baby Ultrasound…

Does Baby Ultrasound Pose Any Risk to my Child?

No — baby ultrasounds are completely safe for both you and your baby when performed by a trained professional.

Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, to create images of your baby inside the womb. It has been used for decades in prenatal care and has no known harmful effects on mothers or developing babies.

We employ only Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (RDMS) at Burgess Imaging to ensure adherence to safe medical protocols.

Ultrasound is one of the safest ways to monitor your pregnancy and celebrate milestones like the 12-week and 20-week ultrasounds.

What Preparations Are Required for a Baby Ultrasound?

Preparation for a baby ultrasound is simple and depends on how far along you are in your pregnancy.

  • For early ultrasounds (around 12 weeks): We may ask you to arrive with a full bladder, as this helps provide a clearer image of your baby. Try to drink 24–32 ounces of water about an hour before your appointment and avoid using the restroom until after your scan.
  • For later ultrasounds (like the 20-week anatomy scan): A full bladder usually isn’t necessary. You can eat and drink normally beforehand.

We’ll let you know if any special instructions apply to your visit. Dress comfortably and feel free to bring a support person.

Will I (or my baby) Feel Anything?

Baby ultrasounds are completely painless and non-invasive. You may feel slight pressure as the sonographer moves the transducer across your belly, especially if a full bladder is needed for the scan. Some gel may feel cool or a little messy, but it’s harmless and easily wiped off afterward.

Your baby won’t feel the ultrasound either. The sound waves used are very gentle and simply bounce off your baby to create images — they don’t cause any discomfort or harm. Most expectant mothers describe the experience as comfortable, and many enjoy seeing their baby move or wave on the screen.

If you ever feel any discomfort during the scan, just let the sonographer know — your comfort is a priority.

How Long Does a Baby Ultrasound Procedure Take?

A baby ultrasound typically takes 20 to 45 minutes, depending on how far along you are and how clearly the baby can be seen. Earlier scans, like a 12-week ultrasound, are usually quicker, while later scans—such as the 20-week anatomy scan—may take a bit longer since more detailed images are captured.

Factors like your baby’s position, movement, or if a full bladder is required can also affect the time. Our sonographers work patiently to ensure you’re comfortable and that we get the best possible images of your baby.

You’re welcome to ask questions during the procedure, and we’ll let you know what to expect every step of the way.

Will I Receive Photos and/or Videos the Same Day?

Yes! We will provide you with printed photos and/or digital images of your baby as soon as the procedure is complete.

If your ultrasound includes video clips or digital files, we can usually provide those immediately via email or a secure download link. If there’s any delay—such as technical issues or additional editing—we’ll let you know exactly when to expect your images.

Please note: if your ultrasound was ordered for medical purposes, your doctor will receive a detailed report, but you can still request a copy of the images for personal use.

Will Insurance Cover Baby Ultrasound?

It depends on the type of ultrasound and the reason for the visit.

Diagnostic ultrasounds—such as those ordered by your doctor to check your baby’s growth, heartbeat, or development—are typically covered by insurance. These are considered medically necessary and are part of routine prenatal care, including common scans like the 12-week and 20-week ultrasound.

However, if you’re coming in for an elective or keepsake ultrasound (such as 3D/4D imaging done just for bonding or photos), insurance usually does not cover it, since it’s not medically required.

We recommend checking with your insurance provider ahead of time. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to help you understand your options or provide documentation you can use to verify coverage.

Do I Need a Doctor’s Order to Get a Baby Ultrasound?

It depends on the type of ultrasound you’re scheduling.

If you’re coming in for a diagnostic baby ultrasound—such as the 12-week or 20-week scan used to check your baby’s development—you’ll typically need a referral or order from your healthcare provider. These are considered part of your routine prenatal care and are usually scheduled through your doctor or midwife.

On the other hand, if you’re scheduling an elective or keepsake ultrasound (for bonding, photos, or video), no doctor’s order is required. You can book directly with us at your convenience.

If you’re unsure which type you need, we’re happy to help you figure it out.

If I am Confined to a Wheelchair, Can I Still Get a Baby Ultrasound?

Yes, absolutely. We welcome and accommodate patients who use wheelchairs. Our facility is wheelchair-accessible, and our staff is experienced in assisting patients with limited mobility.

In many cases, you can remain in your wheelchair during the ultrasound, depending on the area being examined and the type of scan. If a transfer is needed for the best imaging results, we’ll assist you gently and respectfully, ensuring your comfort and safety at every step.

Your care and dignity are our top priorities.

Can My Family Attend a Baby Ultrasound Procedure?

Yes, your family is welcome to join you during your baby ultrasound! We understand that this is a special and emotional moment, and we encourage you to share it with your loved ones. Fathers, grandparents, and children are all invited to attend—just let us know in advance how many guests you plan to bring so we can make sure the room is comfortable for everyone.

Please keep in mind that very young children may become restless, so bringing a quiet activity or an extra adult to supervise can be helpful.

Our goal is to make your ultrasound a joyful, memorable experience for you and your family.
